Progress to Date

May 2024

Ssalongo Walusimbi is a blind man of 50 years and does not work, he depends on charity from a few good samaritans including their landlord who has allowed them to stay in a one-roomed house, rent free.
Nnalongo Walusimbi is a 48-year-old who washes clothes in the neighbourhood to bring in some income for the family even though it is not much.

Wasswa Kigozi is the oldest son who works at a local market and occasionally sends money back home to help with expenses.
Kiiza Kisitu is still in elementary school and is quickly outgrowing all the available school uniform sizes. Because his attendance at school has not been regular, he was not able to pass the academic appraisal exam that he took in May-2024 so he has been advised to repeat a lower class. We will look into extra classes for him to catch up and I believe that with our intervention, he will have some steady school time.

Nakamya Nakiruta and Angel Zawedde are girls who have been taken on by a group of well-wishers and attend a boarding school where they spend most of the year.
Miracle Namubiru is a a daughter of school going age but has never been to school so we enrolled her at a kindergarten near home where the proprietor was happy to take her on for afternoon classes so she can catch up.

Kisakye Nansubuga is the four-year-old girl that we had to rush to a nearby clinic because our contact found out that she had been sick for a week with no treatment. She will be enrolled into school next year.
Precious Baguma is their youngest son, a 15-month-old baby boy. He is in good health.

We onboarded the family on 20-May-24 even though we had profiled them on 10-June-23. We started off with an emergency medical intervention because their four-year-old daughter (Kisakye) had been sick for over a week with no medical attention. She was found with excessive malaria and immediately put on drip to recuperate and by the time we delivered their starter food hamper, there was some improvement although she was left with a few doses to complete her treatment. This intervention was a one-off. We have also taken on two of the children at the moment, Kiiza and Miracle.

Miracle and Kiiza have started the second term of the school year which commenced on 27-May-24 although they missed the first term. At the end of the year they will be evaluated and considered for promotion to the next class depending on their academic performance.

July 2024

Ssalongo Walusimbi stays at home all day due to blindness and usually babysits the younger children.
Gorreti Nnalongo does casual work to sustain the family. She currently washes clothes or fries cassava for sale when there is not much laundry to do.

Wasswa Kigozi is currently working at a grocery store. He was not able to complete his primary education and at 21 years of age, he feels out of place trying to return to school. Luckily a good Samaritan has offered him a temporal position at a grocery store which keeps him busy. He is able to visit home once in a while.

Julius Kiiza is enrolled in P5 at Kira Primary School. He is left with P6 and P7 to complete the primary education.
Nakamya Nakiruta and Angel Zawedde are in boarding school where they stay during the term and during the holidays to reduce the pressure on their parents to provide.

Miracle Namubiru is enrolled in Middle Class at Rosario Nursery School and is excited about school.
Kisakye Nansubuga and Precious Baguma are the youngest and currently stay home.

The two children who were enrolled in school are excited about starting again. The challenge that remains is how to help the family have a sustainable source of income in order to meet needs like food and medical care. Overall, they are grateful for the help that is coming in.

Dec 2024

Ssalongo Walusimbi is optimistic that if his sight is restored, he will be able to support

the family. Gorreti Nnalongo has to go back to her old neighbourhood to work for her

old clients because she does not have clients in the new area they have moved into.

Julius did not do well in school and so has been advised to repeat the class.

We will need to sit down with him and discuss an alternative like a vocational school.

The family is settling into their new neighbourhood.

Feb 2025

Because the family shifted to a place farther from the schools we enrolled them into at the start of the intervention, we needed to find affordable options closer to where they stay. Our contact, Robert was able to find them placement at a Church of Uganda school called Bweyogerere Church of Uganda Primary School. He managed to get Miracle into Primary One and Julius into Primary Five. Miracle will need coaching so she can come up to speed seeing that she only completed two terms in kindergarten. The school felt her age was more appropriately matched to P1 than to kindergarten.
