Michael speaking to the family in their current living conditions, coming up with a plan to move forward together.

"Today we went out and bought dry food rations for the family, scholastic requirements and mattresses. We also went out to the school where the kids were admitted to pay for one set of uniforms. School fees have been fully paid for all four children." We also went to see the house that our contact managed to get through a broker. It is one long room and we asked the landlady to touch it up so it is habitable." Michael Mugume, TSW Shepherd

"Good morning from Uganda...we managed to move the Kataikes into their new room last evening. The traffic was murder, driving across the city so I got there late and by the time we were done arranging the house for them to come and find everything in place, it was dark. I was easier to take videos because the lighting was bad, i know that you will not understand the language but most of the chatter is excitement from the children. The children screamed when they walked into the room and were even more excited that they each had their own bags with shoes. They were so excited over soap and toothbrushes, you wouldn't believe it. Then they started to do summersaults on the mattresses and some of the neighbours gathered around to see what it was all about. The broker's sister happened to know Betty and in a later part of the video, she hugged her while repeatedly saying God is good. I had to constantly stop them from kneeling (unfortunately it is a custom here) and they kept speaking blessings over us saying, may God replenish your resources." Michael Mugume, TSW Shepherd

Dec 2023

The Kataikes-Katwe continue to enjoy living in their larger living quarters. Three of the children are in school and their fees will be paid for indefinitely by The Sharing Well. All three children struggled attending school after two years of no school. The Sharing Well is paying for monthly extra tutoring for all three children. The mother contributes to 1/3 of the rent as the Sharing Well pays 2/3 of the rent. This ratio slowly changes as the head of the house becomes more self-sufficient in hopes of one day being 100% self supporting.

May 2024

Betty Kataike is still doing laundry as a source of income and occasionally washes dishes in the market for additional income. The dry-cleaning business that we started for her has not taken off yet but she still manages to raise a third of her rent every month.

Christopher Ssonko is a helpful boy according to his teachers which is why we believe they have been passing him along to the next class even though he is struggling academically for no clear reason to us.

Janet Mugaba and Samuel Muguya are in school and on normal progress. They are siblings living with their aunt because their father (brother to Betty) could not take care of them. They have commenced coaching for the second term.

All three children started the second term of the school year on 27-May-24.

July 2024

Betty Kataike is still providing for her family and is trying to sell vegetables in front of their house for additional income.
Christopher Ssonko is in school and in good health.
Janet Mugaba is in school and in good health.

Samuel Muguya is in school but has been unwell with flu and cough.
The family are still together and are contributing a third of the rent per month.

Aug 2024

Betty Kataike has managed to add banana leaves to her list grocery items for sale. Christopher Ssonko no specific update at this time.
Janet Mugaba no specific update at this time.
Samuel Muguya is dealing with tonsilitis but is on treatment.

The children are all in school and will be ending the second academic term on 23-AUG-24.

Oct 2024

The children are back to school and we managed to get them new shoes. The children had started peddling boiled eggs to earn some money but our contact discouraged them as it would distract them from their studies. Betty the mother was not comfortable with leaving their present house (the landlord handed it over to property managers who have raised the rent) and she is willing to cover the balance from our contribution (currently we are contributing UGX. 100,000 and she is pitching iny UGX. 70,000)

Dec 2024

The children have completed the school year and are now on holiday helping their mother with chores. Betty still depends on laundry washing for the family’s upkeep. The children’s academic performance is still not good and unfortunately the school system does not adequately cater for academically-struggling children and so they are simply hurried along

March 2025

The family is generally well and the kids are in school. The mother is doing her best to run the laundry business.
